Balanced Diet vs Fad Diets – What Actually Works?
In today’s time, everyone wants to lose weight quickly, look fit and achieve the ‘perfect body’ goals shown on social media. For this reason, people get attracted to trendy diet plans i.e. “fad diets” without thinking. Every day a new diet starts trending on social media – sometimes Keto, sometimes GM Diet, sometimes Intermittent Fasting. These diets are called fad diets. On the other hand, balanced diet has been described as the basis of healthy life by experts for years. So what is actually right? Fad diet or balanced diet?
Let us understand in detail in this blog. But the question is, do these fad diets really work? Or is balanced diet the only permanent solution?
In this blog, we will know in detail the difference, effects, advantages and disadvantages between these two.
What is a Balanced Diet?
A balanced diet is a diet in which the body gets all the necessary nutrients in the right amount. Its purpose is not just to lose weight but to maintain overall health. It includes all the nutrients as per the body's need - carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
Main components of a balanced diet:
Carbohydrates: For energy (eg – rice, wheat, oatmeal)
Protein: For muscle repair and growth (eg – pulses, egg, milk, paneer)
Fat: For hormone balance and energy storage (eg – ghee, nuts, seeds)
Vitamins and minerals: For immune system and body functions (eg – fruits, vegetables)
Fiber: For keeping the digestive system healthy (eg – whole grains, fruits)

- Physical and mental energy is maintained
- Prevention of lifestyle diseases like diabetes, high BP
What is a Fad Diet?
Fad diets are diets that claim to reduce weight rapidly in a very short period of time, but do not have nutritional depth. These are often popular through social media without scientific evidence. Such as – Keto, GM Diet, Intermittent Fasting, Paleo, Liquid Diets, etc.
Examples of common fad diets:

- Digestive problems: Lack of fiber can cause constipation, gas problems.
- Difficult to follow for a long time: Most fad diets are not sustainable.
Characteristics of fad diets:
- Claims of immediate weight loss

- Aimed at a limited time
- Promoted by social media and celebrities
